News / Education International 10th World Congress takes a strong position on academic freedom

At the 10th World Congress of Education International (EI) in Buenos Aires this summer, education union leaders unanimously adopted a resolution on academic freedom proposed by CAUT, the American Federation of Teachers, and the University and College Union.

In the face of rising attacks from governments and pressure groups, the resolution calls on EI to actively defend academic freedom, institutional autonomy and individual academics.

“This motion shows the steadfast commitment of teachers and scholars to condemn political and institutional repression around the world,” said CAUT President Peter McInnis. “We must all actively hold governments and institutions to account as we safeguard academic freedom and our professional and human rights.”
